VitalStim® Therapy

Ability Plus Therapy is the first clinic in Brevard to offer VitalStim® Therapy for children. This is a cutting-edge treatment method of dysphagia (difficulty swallowing). The VitalStim® Therapy is used in combination with traditional swallowing exercises to accelerate strengthening and muscle coordination, restore function, and help create new neural pathways in the brain for swallowing. Research has shown that the combination of VitalStim® and traditional therapy results in more optimal outcomes.

Patients with severe swallowing dysfunction have the potential to improve and eliminate or reduce the need for a gastronomy tube (G-tube).

The VitalStim® Therapy System is a form of Neuro-muscular electrical stimulation (NMES) which causes targeted muscles to contract while the patient is swallowing. It is a safe and non-invasive therapy, using electrodes on the outside of the neck to target specific muscles that promote normal swallowing.

VitalStim® Therapy is contraindicated for patients with active tumors. Caution must be taken with use of VitalStim® with patients who have deep brain or vagal nerve stimulators, history of seizures, or implanted metal in the path of the electrical current.
